A Prisoner of Birth

A Prisoner of Birth by Jeffrey Archer (Pan Books)
I have always been a closet Archer fan. (I know, embarrassing isn’t it? When I was younger I wanted to be Florentyna Kane with all my heart.)

I haven’t read one for a while, and for some reason wasn’t expecting much when this hardback tome arrived on my desk... but I was quickly gripped.

Whatever you may think of (is it Baron?) Archer, he wields a pacey plot.

This book centres around a man from the East End, Danny Cartwright, who – through a horrific series of events, finds himself imprisoned for the murder of his best friend, his fiancé Beth’s brother Bertie. (No, I’m not giving it all away, that happens right in the beginning.)

The rest of the book is engaged in recovering from this injustice.

There are a host of recognisable Archer characters: the beautiful, if wildly under-developed character of Beth, the noble, exceedingly well-bred Nicholas and his counter-point, the villainous, lordly rogue Spencer Craig.

It read fast and kept me gripped. Archer might write to a formula, but it’s a terribly readable one and I enjoyed this book enough to wonder if I have missed any others on his booklist that could add a rollicking read to a weekend away.
