Husbands by Adele Parks (Penguin)
Belinda secretly married Steve when they were both young, living in Scotland and deeply in love. Years later, her impromptu decision comes back to haunt her when she bumps into Steve at an Elvis Tribute competition.

While Belinda has achieved a lot of her youthful ambitions, Steve has become an Elvis impersonator. The problem? She is now known as Bella and is married to a wealthy man, Phillip – but he has no idea his wife is already (technically) married to someone else…

On the surface, Bella's life looks perfect, and her friends Laura and Amelia are incredibly forgiving and understanding. Laura, a single mom and recent divorcee, is as close as a sister for Bella as possible.

When Laura falls in love with Steve, Bella's secret threatens to destroy their friendship and her marriage with Phillip. Things come to a head when both couples take a trip to Las Vegas – and the potential disaster escalates.

Husbands is an easy read, although sometimes it can be confusing because each chapter is told from another character's perspective. You'll get an understanding of each character's train of thought: Bella's confusion and moral flexibility when it comes to bigamy; Phillip's doubts about their marriage; Laura's desperation and loneliness; and Stevie's unbridled passion for both Laura and Bella.

The plot is far-fetched (but isn't that what escapism is about?) and it's a little difficult to sympathise with Bella, who flits from job to job but it's fascinating to unravel this story.

Author Adele Parks's writing is quirky and fresh with a wonderful flow. She keeps the attention focussed on relationship dynamics and the overwhelming emotions of thorny intimate affairs.

Maybe it's just because I'm a single woman, but this book has transformed my perspective on the importance of trust, responsibility… and temptation.
