Michael Kors hosted a special preview of his 40th anniversary collection in the New York theater district with popular models and a performance by Rufus Wainwright.

The show was also an ode to Broadway.

Kors says the clothing will be available in September, when the world will hopefully be in a better place than what it's been.

“Things definitely have changed dramatically for designers and everyone around the world during this past year,” says the founder of the eponymous label.

40 years of timelessness

“I think coming into this collection, knowing that it was my 40th anniversary, I really wanted to dig deep and get to the root of what Michael Kors is," he says.

“Since the very beginning, there is this sense of timelessness in Michael Kors and the clothes have legs, so to speak."

Special occasions are still to come

"I think the concept of what a special occasion is has changed for all of us, so suddenly being able to eat outside - even if it's bitter freezing cold - means that ‘I want to put on a cute coat’ and that [will be] a special occasion," Michael Kors says.

“Shopping – even at the hardware store – was a special occasion,” the designer says, chuckling.

Kors explains that he really wanted this collection to be focused on the idea of stepping out again.

The Fall/Winter collection arrives in stores in September, so these are the clothes that will be “right for you” when the world will hopefully be in a better place.

“And we’ll hopefully be able to celebrate next New Year’s – I think everyone will feel celebratory and get dressed up.”

“When you get back into the office, you’re going to want to look great. It won’t be fuzzy slippers and yoga pants. That’s for sure,” Michael Kors concludes.
