  • Halloween is almost upon us, so we decided to put together a list of our favourite horrors for you to binge on.
  • From creative storylines to twisted, WTF moments, this list has got it all.
  • So grab some popcorn and a drink and stream these picks available locally on Netflix and Showmax.

We're creeping closer to the end of October, and you know what that means - Halloween!

Sure, you can watch horror movies at any time of the year, but there's something extra special (or should we say, spooky?) about binging on some scary flicks during this month.

When it comes down to which films to watch, there are many options out there, so we decided to make things a little easier by putting together a list of our favourite twisted, scary, oh-crap-we-did-not-see-that-coming films for your enjoyment.

So whip out your popcorn and turn out the lights, here are six horror movies that you should definitely watch this Halloween.

Ma (Available on Showmax)

Octavia Spencer takes on the role of Ma in this twisted thriller. A lonely middle-aged woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party in the basement of her home. There are some rules, though - one of the kids must remain sober, no cursing is allowed, and most importantly, do not go upstairs. Oh, and of course, she prefers that everyone call her "Ma".

As Ma's hospitality turns into obsession, what started as a teenage dream quickly becomes a terrorising nightmare.

A Quiet Place (Available on Netflix)

This 2018 film directed by John Krasinski is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When earth is taken over by bloodthirsty aliens, the only way to stay alive is by remaining silent. While the vicious creatures are blind, their hearing is impeccable - and if they can hear you, they can hunt you.

Aside from directing, John also stars in this film alongside wife Emily Blunt. The creative storyline will keep you hooked from start to finish. This is one you do not want to miss.

Us (Available on Showmax)

Some people believe that we all have a doppelgänger out there - this movie explores that theory, but the outcome is terrifying.

Directed by Jordan Peele, the film stars Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke as a young couple spending time with their kids at a beachside holiday home. What starts as the perfect summer getaway quickly turns dark when their doppelgängers turn up to terrorise them.

The Purge (Available on Showmax)

Plagued by crime and overcrowded prisons, the American government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which all criminal activity - including murder - becomes legal.

During this time, citizens have no access to emergency services. It's every person for themselves as one family battles to stay alive in this enthralling film.

Hush (Available on Netflix)

After going through some tough times, Maddie, a deaf writer, decides to retreat into the woods to live a solitary life.

When a masked killer appears from the shadows and attempts to make his way inside her home, Maddie must fight for her survival, depending on her other senses to keep her alive.

An isolated house in the woods plus mysterious knife-wielding stranger always makes for a good horror/thriller, and this one is no different.

In the Tall Grass (Available on Netflix)

A pregnant woman and her brother venture into a vast field of tall grass after hearing a little boy's cry for help. Once inside, they quickly realise something sinister is going down. Is the grass alive? Is there demonic spirit floating about? Whatever it is, it's keeping them from leaving.

Based on the novel by Stephen King and Joe Hill, this is one of those films where you really need to concentrate to keep up with the plotline. It also has quite a few WTF moments. Sometimes they arise from shock and other times from confusion. Still worth the watch though.
