Cape Town author Alistair Mackay’s novel It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way, published by Kwela, has been
longlisted for the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) Awards in the
novel category.
The novel, set in a dystopian Cape Town, features “three queer friends who … do their damndest to find their way through a harsh, unforgiving world”, wrote our reviewer. They “are brought together in their shared quest to find some form of solace and genuine, meaningful connection in a late capitalist world”.
