- Shakira has opened up about the hardship she faced when she split from Gerard Piqué.
- The 47-year-old shared that she put her career on hold so he could play football.
- She added that her eldest son dealt with his pain after their split by turning to music.
In 2022, Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced their separation after an 11-year relationship.
Like most people in her field, the Hips Don't Lie hitmaker dealt with her pain by pouring her heart into her music, releasing a viral hit song titled #53 with producer Bizarrap in January last year.
The song bagged her the Song Of The Year award at the 2023 Latin Grammys.
Now, the 47-year-old has opened up about the sacrifices she made during her relationship, including putting her music career on hold.
In an interview with The Times, the singer said: "For a long time I put my career on hold to be next to Gerard, so he could play football. There was a lot of sacrifice for love."
A few months after the couple went their separate ways, Piqué "launched" his new relationship on Instagram with Clara Chia Marti. Launching is modern-day slang for unofficially announcing a new partner by posting them on your feed.
Shakira threw shade at both Gerard and Clara in her Spanish-language song with a lyric loosely translated as: "I was out of your league, that's why you're with someone just like you ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh."
Referencing the relationship, she added: "I'm worth 22-year-olds. You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded in a Rolex for a Casio."

The pair share two sons, 11-year-old Milan and 9-year-old Sasha, and when Shakira was asked what her children thought of the song, she responded by saying: "My sons know that there's only one way to live life and it's accepting the pain. And each one of us has different ways of doing that."
She added that Milan also chose to turn to music to deal with his pain.
"When his father and I were going through separation, he wrote two amazing songs, the kind that will bring you to tears."
On 22 March, Shakira will release her 12th studio album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, (Women Don't Cry Anymore) after seven years.
