Flawed family

For Quora user, Anna McCormack shares that her wedding day was a foretelling of the grievances and gripes she would experience with her husband’s friends and family.

According to Anna, just as she was getting her hair braided by the maid of honour for the wedding, her fiancé’s ex-wife arrived uninvited, acting as a taxi driver for her soon-to-be husband’s intoxicated cousin.

“We heard the ex-wife come roaring up the gravel drive and skid to a stop at the top, and watched the cousin fall out of the car and stagger up the little hill to the house,” says Anna.

Moments later, the best friend of the groom wandered over to the ex-wife with a bottle of tequila. Anna says she watched as the two drank and laughed together.

“Of the thirty or so attendees who knew who the ex-wife was by sight, not one made a move to get her to leave. And that was kind of the story of our short marriage. I was on my own with that bunch,” she says.

A day of disasters

Another user, Andrea Danelle witnessed and heard many things on her wedding day that should have moved her away from the altar and “toward the hills at lightning speed.”

First of all, her fiancé insisted on picking out all the music, says Andrea.

“I walked down the aisle to ‘The Imperial March’. I am not a Star Wars fan,” she says. Additionally, after begging her husband the night before and the day of the wedding not to smash cake in her face - as she didn’t want to ruin her borrowed dress - he did so anyway.

He also ignored all the wedding guests, including the bride’s best friend, who happened to pay for the wedding cake, and her ailing grandmother.

On top of this, the groom mocked the “beautiful and delicious” groom’s cake Andrea surprised him with because it was “very small."

“There's a lot more but I am literally feeling nauseous and angry just thinking about it,” says Andrea.

Medieval mess

Sherry Cole and her ex-husband met at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival and after a few months of courting, decided to have a medieval wedding.

“He made his costume and part of mine and was strutting around like a peacock, with me just an ornament on his arm,” says Sherry. Sherry expresses that she should have realised that the marriage was a terrible mistake when the groom refused to help her open gifts and thank guests because he had put on the invitation that ‘there shall be no presents.’

“Then he left so he ‘could open up our house for the after-party,’ and I was stuck gathering up all the presents and putting them in my car, in my wedding gown, in the pouring rain,” says Sherry.

It was in hindsight that Sherry realised that the only reason for the marriage was so that her (ex) husband could send his ex-girlfriend an invitation to prove to her that she ‘didn’t break his heart’.

“There is a photo of this guy in the dictionary under ‘narcissist.’ He was abusive and eccentric, and it was the worst two years of my life,” she says.
