  • This woman's parents saved up a wedding fund for their daughters to split.
  • The woman's younger sister already used up her half but lost the money during the pandemic when she couldn't get a refund from the venue.
  • Now, the older sister is upset that the parents want to use her half to pay for the sister's wedding at a different venue.

While most parents save up for their children's education, others take it a step further and create a savings account for their children's weddings. In one family, they have set up an account with enough money to pay for their two daughters' weddings.

However, the younger sister lost her half of the amount when she cancelled her wedding during the pandemic, and now the family wants to use the older sister's half to pay for the wedding.

Taking to Reddit, the older sister vented to users and started by letting people know she is the middle child of three. "I have a younger sister and an older brother."

She then continues to share that over the years; her parents saved up thousands to be split between her and her sister when they eventually got married.

"My sister got engaged before me, and they planned their wedding for April 2020." Her sister picked an all-inclusive venue which meant she spent her entire half. However, when the pandemic hit, they had to cancel the wedding, but the venue didn't refund her.

"Unfortunately, their venue has been horrible and has denied them any refund. The wedding insurance doesn't cover pandemics, and they're now going under anyways, so the [money] is just gone," she says.

Her younger sister and fiancé then decided to elope because they couldn't afford to pay for the wedding themselves, and both their families were unhappy with the decision.

"My sister now wants to elope, which my parents and the other family are absolutely horrified by. The only thing she has from the first wedding to take to her second is the wedding dress, which would still need to be altered."

The women in their family have been upset about the decision to elope and are begging them not to do it, but now it is affecting the older sister's wedding fund. "My parents now want to take the other [half] and give it to my sister for another wedding, obviously at a different venue."

This decision by the parents caused the family to fight, accusing the older sister of jealousy.

"They said I want her to elope and not get her wedding because I'm jealous, and why save the money when I'm single and will be for years? I'm 27, and I think it would've been nice to know that my family can help me out too when I get married instead of giving my sister two weddings while I get nothing," she says.

Users of the platform jumped to the comment section to support the older sister, with one saying, "Most people pay for their own wedding; if she can't afford it, then she should just elope despite how the families feel."

Another added, "It was appropriate to state your position, but I hope you didn't do it in an angry way... it just makes you look bad."

Another user pointed out that the older sister shouldn't get penalised for her parents' dreams of seeing their daughters get married. "The true issue is between you and your parents, and I want you to know that you are 100% justified. Your parents don't get to financially penalise you for not fulfilling their dreams on their timeline."
