All celebration cakes are quite expensive; however, wedding cakes are much more costly depending on the number of tiers and height.
According to Cakes and Canvas, two-tier wedding cakes start from R3 500 and are roughly 40cm high. The price of three-tier wedding cakes start from R8 000. One Reddit user offered to bake her brother's wedding cake for a payment of R6 800. However, when he refused to pay, she decided not to bake the cake.

Taking to Reddit, the 25-year-old anonymous woman shared that she loves baking and that it is a passion of hers and something that she does as a hobby in her free time.
She says she usually makes cakes for family and friends for birthdays or special occasions like Christmas or Easter but doesn't charge for these as she gets gifts, gift cards or a dish in return.
"My younger brother and his fiancée were planning their wedding and asked me a few months in advance if I'd be able to make their cake for them," she shared.
She continued to say this would be her biggest order yet because they wanted a three-tier strawberry shortcake. Even though she was initially hesitant, she agreed on the condition that she was to be compensated.

"I gave them a very fair price for a cake of that calibre. They agreed, and I also made it clear that I wanted to be paid before the wedding," the sister says.
She provided the couple with multiple sketches of what the cake would look like and made a practice batch of the cake for them to taste. They loved the cake and approved.
"Fast forward to last week, six days before the wedding, I contacted my brother for my payment as I was going to get started on buying the rest of the ingredients for the cake. He assured me he'd drop off my cheque the next day," she shares.
The next day came, and her brother was a no-show and for the following couple of days too. She said she even offered to collect her money, and the couple made an excuse about their schedules.

"The day before the wedding, I contacted both my brother and his fiancée asking again. They blew up on me and called me selfish for charging them when I don't charge the rest of my family," she shares. "They refused to pay but demanded that I make the cake. I said no, and explained my terms again."
The day of the wedding came, and the sister decided not to attend, which resulted in her brother, the bride and the bride's family calling her nonstop. Following the incident, the sister feels bad and asked Reddit users to weigh in and let her know if she was wrong.

People flooded the comment section in support of her. One person said, "Your brother and his now wife are entitled, but you are definitely not wrong. You were upfront about the charges, and $400 for a 75-person wedding cake is inexpensive. They agreed to this and then tried to guilt you into doing it for free at the last minute. The fact that her family is pilling on shows the family's level of entitlement going on there."
Another complimented her on knowing how to set boundaries at her age, "For a 25-year-old, you have a remarkably good ability to set and enforce boundaries and not be guilted into doing things."Another added that they could at least have helped out with the ingredients, "At a minimum, they need to pay for all the ingredients; it's not cheap for a cake that big."
