  • Wedding proposals are an ancient tradition that has been integrated by many cultures to go with their beliefs.
  • A Lebanese father took to social media to share the vlog he made for his son's engagement to a Turkish woman.
  • He also took the opportunity to explain how the entire proposal process works.

When a man proposes to a woman, it's usually through organising a dinner with family and friends without her knowledge. However, this typically occurs after they have a conversation about getting married.

This engagement or proposal process differs from culture to culture. For example, in the South African Nguni cultures, the man has to send a letter to the woman's family asking for her hand in marriage before performing the modern tradition of popping the question.

One father documented his son's proposal to a woman who lived down the street from them and posted it online.

Taking to TikTok, Eddie Fakhir posted a video he captioned, "My son's official Turkish proposal." He then narrates how the day will go while standing in front of his immediate family carrying a bouquet of red flowers.

The father, son and around 70 family members proceed to walk down the street, carrying gifts as traditional Lebanese music plays. When they arrive at the woman's house, they meet with the woman's family, and the son hands the flowers to the bride-to-be.

"As us Lebanese are starting to come in - in the Turkish tradition - we come to the house, ask for her hand with the immediate family on both sides; my immediate family is over 70 people."

Then he continues to tell users how the entire process goes when they arrive at the house. "So, what happens is, the bride-to-be will come down, she'll have some coffee in her hand, and she'll give it to Isaac (the son), and it depends on what his reaction is; her father would say yes or no. A little footnote, she brings it all salty."

The bride-to-be appears wearing a white long-sleeve dress carrying coffee, and her father says, 'yes'. Thereafter, Isaac puts a ring on the bride-to-be's engagement finger with a red string connected to Isaac's ring.

"So, now the father cuts [the string], he's accepted him into their family," the father adds. A woman puts jewellery on the bride-to-be's wrist that has diamonds matching her engagement ring. The father then says it is a Lebanese tradition to play the drums after the engagement is accepted.

The bride-to-be and groom begin dancing while everyone surrounds them, and in other scenes, the mother, father and members of both families join in.

"Now, it's the Turkish side," the father says, telling the users why the music has changed. They cut to another scene where everyone is dishing up food, "And now, it's all about the food." The video moves on to show users Turkish and Lebanese delicacies and drinks.

After indulging in delicious food, the families hold hands and begin dancing. The video also includes a cute baby who steals the show. "

That's a wrap. Now, I'm gonna [sic] wait for the planning of the wedding."

Users of the app jumped in on the comment section to share their opinions, with some loving the insight into the traditions. "Wow, I can't believe this app is free. We get to learn so much about the world."

Another added, saying, "Imagine your dad vlogging your engagement," to which the father responded by saying, "I was requested, loved it." Others were already asking about the wedding, saying, "If this is the proposal, I can't wait to see the wedding."
