Over time, there has been a shift from feeding dogs leftovers to owners including their canine companions' dry and nutritious meals in their monthly budgets, and when it comes to annual costs, South Africa is one of the cheapest places to feed your dog, while Japan is considered the most expensive.

This according to a survey conducted by CashNetUSA following research on the average cost of dog food, including dry kibble and wet food, from local supermarkets in 97 countries across the world.

The survey found, on average, the annual cost of dog food in South Africa is $267.81 (R4 994), making it the fifth least expensive globally.
