If you're under 40, a sobering new study has revealed that any amount of alcohol is bad for you – a finding that may be challenged by some people.

Over the years, studies suggested that moderate drinking (defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two for men) could provide some health benefits, such as reducing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The authors of the latest study don't refute this, but say it applies to people older than 40 and without underlying health conditions. 

"... when you look at the cumulative health impact, particularly among older adults, it shows that a small amount is actually better for you than no drinking. For all other causes, it's harmful at all levels of consumption," senior author Emmanuela Gakidou, professor of health metrics sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington's School of Medicine, told CNN.
