A response to an alarm led to the shooting and killing of a security guard outside Khanyolwethu High School in Lwandle on Friday 8 December.
Residents of the area are concerned about escalating crime levels and appeal to law-enforcement agencies to strengthen security in the area. Such remarks came in the aftermath of a security officer being shot and killed when on duty on Friday 8 December.
He was apparently also robbed of his firearm at the time.
A community leader who refused to be named for fear of harassment said they were shocked by the incident.
“The security officer was responding to an alarm that was ringing at Khanyolwethu High School,” the leader related. “He was shot and killed while opening a school gate to ascertain what was happening inside.
“He was shot multiple times.”
Also being investigated is that it was possibly a trap set by the deceased’s killers.
He stated shootings and robberies had become the norm in the area. He urged the national government to take note of escalating crime levels there.
“Our officers are working tirelessly. But we have a problem of shortage of resources.
“We need more police vans and officers in the station.” The community leader urged officers not to leave any stone unturned in their investigation.
Lwandle police spokesperson Sgt Mthokozisi Gama said the incident in which a security officer was fatally wounded in front of Khanyolwethu High School occurred at 23:30.
“The 51-year-old deceased responded to an alarm at the school and parked the company van at the locked school gate. As he was outside surveying unknown gunmen shot him twice in the head, took his work firearm and disappeared.”
He said the motive at this stage was robbery, for nothing else was taken from him.
Gama stated murder and armed robbery cases were opened and investigated by Lwandle police detectives.
