In May 2019, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Die Werf area of Fountains Mall, a groundbreaking event took place, a first “Jail and Bail” fundraiser.
This innovative concept, imagined by the Jbay Trauma Support Centre, aimed at engaging prominent community members in fundraising efforts, by playfully “jailing” them for their involvement in community affairs.
The J-Bay Trauma Support Centre, a non-profit organisation providing crucial services to community members in the Kouga-Koukamma district, relies on donations to cover operational costs.
To ensure their continued support, creative fundraising is essential, and the spirited Jail and Bail event perfectly encapsulates this ethos.
The essence of Jail and Bail lies in its theatre, resembling a genuine trial.
The centre’s team meticulously crafts formal “charge sheets,” and detainees are encouraged to have their families and friends write letters to the organisers, providing insight into the accused.
Each participant receives a personalised charge sheet, complete with evidence, presented by the prosecution on the day of the event.
On April 6 Fountains Mall was once again abuzz with excitement, as Jail & Bail 2024 unfolded. From the detainees, to the public, everyone revelled in the festivities, with support pouring in.
This year’s detainees included prominent figures such as Dean Gilbert, Deon Freemantle, Gillian Kennedy, Githe-Meret Hancke Koertzen, Nikita Paulik, Joanie Nel, and Carla de Jager. Oasis FM captured the entire event, amplifying its reach.
Throughout the day, prizes were auctioned off, detainees were bailed out, and fines were paid for minor disruptions in court proceedings. This resulted in nearly R26 000 raised in support of the J-Bay Trauma Support Centre.
According to Nicolette Yssel, who is part of the trauma centre team, this impressive amount speaks volumes about the generosity and community spirit of those involved.
“The success of Jail & Bail 2024 would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors, and the unwavering dedication of the J-Bay Trauma Support Centre team. To them, heartfelt thanks are extended, as they continue to embody the spirit of community and compassion,” said Yssel.
As the event drew to a close, anticipation for Jail & Bail 2025 already looms large, promising another year of camaraderie, laughter, and unwavering support for a noble cause.
