Two security guards sustained injuries following a cash-in-transit heist that took place on the R411 road between Mqanduli and Viedgiesville at Cezu locality on Monday, January 9.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said that the two security guards were en route to the depot from Elliotdale following a routine collection.

Kinana said that the cash vehicle was allegedly forced to stop by two Toyota double cab bakkies.

"While driving on the R411, the vehicle allegedly came to a speed hump, where it was then stopped by a group of people wearing bullet proof vests, armed with rifles and pistols,” said Kinana.

"The robbers started shooting at the truck, forcing it to stop. They pulled out the security guards and instructed them to lie down next to the truck."

Kinana added that suspects allegedly undertook to install explosive devices on the truck while others were blocking the traffic flow on both sides of the road.

“The truck exploded three times before the culprits took all the cash, with an undisclosed amount of money taken by the suspects. It is further alleged that a pistol belonging to one of the security guards was taken. The security guards were injured as a result of the explosion that took place and were taken to hospital for treatment.”

Kinana added that suspects then fled the scene using the said vehicles in the direction of Ngqeleni village. No arrests have been made.
