The Eastern Cape’s Education MEC, Fundile Gade has sent heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased Arthur Mfebe High School learner.
The 16-year-old Grade 8 learner has died after being involved in “faction fights” with other boys on Tuesday, August 16.
“The deceased learner from Oathay Rural Settlement was killed by other learners in full view of educators and learners, especially learners from St. Marks which is the main feeder primary school and some members of the community,” said department spokesperson Mali Mtima in a statement.
Mtima said that the situation necessitated the School Governing Body (SGB) and leadership to call for a speedy meeting with stakeholders to resolve the matter.
“The meeting was attended by local stakeholders, including the ChrisHani West Education District's Top Management, SAPS District Commissioner, and Chief Zwelabantu Matanzima of the Abathembu Kingdom Royal Council to map a way forward," said Mtima.
Meanwhile, classes had to be suspended at the school following the incident.
“Due to the volatile situation at the school, the meeting unanimously agreed that normal schooling in the prevailing circumstances is untenable, hence the decision to suspend classes. A meeting to map the way forward is scheduled for next week Monday, August 22 at 08:00 at the school with parents and stakeholders.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said that cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened for investigation.
“According to police reports a group of learners entered the school premises and started attacking the other learners as they were arriving at school. The circumstances surrounding the attacks is still unknown at this stage," said Kinana.
He added that during the incident another learner, age unknown, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while an 18-year-old suspect was arrested.
"More arrests are expected as the investigation process unfolds and the suspect is expected to appear in the Cofimvaba Magistrate's Court once charged," added Kinana.
