Department of Education, Head of Department, Dr Soyisile Nuku, celebrated Nelson Mandela Day in a different fashion, as he handed over 100 tablets to two schools in Mthatha.

The schools who benefited from this initiative are Nkululeko Ralo Primary School and Mbuqe Park Primary School in Mthatha.

He also promoted reading, as it is one of their strategies the department is focusing on including at the National Level.

“We have to take reading seriously, because when we are talking about education we are talking about three things and that is reading, writing and counting, more especially in the foundation phase.

“I took this decision because reading is part of our plan,” said Nuku.

Nuku said that he had chosen to spend some of his 67 minutes by visiting these two schools.

“As the department we always ensure that we buy reading books for learners.

“We appeal to those schools which might have shortages of these books to submit lists to their districts, as we are now busy receiving lists from the schools because we are preparing for year 2024.”

The principal of Nkululeko Ralo Primary School, Ayanda Tyantsi, said that even though these tablets were donated to Grade 7 learners they would make sure that even pupils from the foundation phase use them.

“It was our first time to receive such gifts. We will make sure that the foundation phase also uses them so that they can learn more about technology while they are still young,” said Tyantsi.

He said this would totally change the minds of learners from this school.
