A retiree, Nosipho Gwija-Mdladla (59) from Luvundu locality in Willowvale, has embarked on assisting children and those interested in reading, by opening Siyakhana Reading Club in her home.

She said that so far she is assisting 70 children from her village.

Before she retired last year, she was the Head of Department at Mtshazi Primary School in Willowvale.

Gwija-Mdladla said that she had realised that some of the children were struggling to read in her area.

She said that even during a church service it was hard for some of them to read the Bible, and this led them to losing confidence.

Gwija-Mdladla said,

It was always painful to me to see that, because some started to arrive late for service because they were afraid that they may be called to read the Bible. While I was still a teacher I used to have my own book club, where I was assisting learners from my school.

She added that in her reading club everybody is welcome, and they do not pay for this service.

According to her, they also share stories, summarise and learn how to spell the words.

“No-one is supporting my programme, except Nali Bali organisation. They also assist me by bringing papers that are also used by these children to learn. I will be happy if people can donate books and dictionaries so that I can have more equipment.”

Besides this, Gwija-Mdladla also came up with a plan to unite two localities that were having a misunderstanding due to the quarry that was at Luvundu Locality.

She said that she has started a netball tournament where the elderly can participate, and she hired seven employees who are assisting her, in her reading club from both localities.

She emphasised that when they are playing, they do not speak about what is happening in their localities, they only talk about netball. The same applies when they are in this club, they only talk about reading.

“I see that this is bringing peace among us now.”
