Six men arrested at Mvumelwano locality, Qumbu in connection with an attempted cash-in transit-robbery in a supermarket in Mthatha, will appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on February 2 for formal bail application.

Masithembe Msongelwa, Lindokuhle Kheswa, Yamkela Nomvala, Yandisa Gomo, Zukisa Nombiza and Daniel Tsibhe appeared in the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Monday, January 30.

According to Hawk’s spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela the accused were arrested by members of the Provincial Cash-In-Transit (CIT) task team comprised of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Eastern Cape Crime Intelligence and Komani Public Order Police (POP) in a joint operation with the Provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT) on January 26, 2023.

“They were arrested on charges of attempted cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition. It is alleged that on January 26, 2023 at about 11:00, the Eastern Cape Task Team members were following up on information on an attempted CIT robbery that occurred at a supermarket in Mthatha on January 25, 2023, where a Fidelity Cash Solution truck was involved,” said Mgolodela.

She added that it is alleged that a security guard was shot and robbed of his firearm during the robbery, while a bystander was hit by a stray bullet.

“The task team members assisted by TRT members spotted a Corolla with five armed occupants and it was stopped on the N2 highway where the suspects were apprehended. They were found in possession of four unlicensed firearms, which included three 9mm pistols, a revolver and ammunition.”

Mgolodela further added that during preliminary investigation, four of the suspects were linked to a number of CIT heists in the province.
