An intelligence driven operation by Tactical Teams deployed in Majola led to the arrest of two males aged between 25 and 27 for attempted murder, robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition at Qhoboshendlini locality in Port St Johns.
Both accused are expected to appear before the Port St Johns Magistrate’s court tomorrow, April 17.
Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said that police followed crime intelligence information regarding wanted suspects for a case of attempted murder and robbery that occurred at Ngxongweni locality where a Grade 12 learner (19) from Nkosi Mvinjelwa Senior Secondary School in Port St Johns was shot in the chest whilst on his way to school with other learners and their cellphones robbed by two suspects.
“The victim survived the ordeal and is recovering.
"Two homemade guns, 63 live shells, a 9 mm pistol with an erased serial number and two cellphones believed to be those robbed from these leaners were found from a suspect (25) whilst another suspect was found in possession of two shotguns. The suspects were arrested and detained in Port St Johns police station awaiting their court appearance,” said Matyolo.
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Phumzile Cetyana praised the good work displayed by police in quickly apprehending those involved in the attempted murder and robbery of school kids who were exercising their right of schooling.
“Police will leave no stone unturned in fighting crime in the district and bringing the perpetrators to justice,” said Cetyana.
