A man from Greenbushes has died this morning after being stabbed at the weekend during an argument, allegedly about the victim's dog.
According to police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, just before 21:00 on Friday, 32-year-old Riaan Marais was involved in an altercation with another man regarding Marais's dog at a house in Melkhout Street. The suspect had allegedly approached Marais about the dog on his girlfriend's behalf.
"As the argument heated up, the suspect picked up a knife and stabbed Marais once in his head. When Marais collapsed, the suspect left. The exact nature of the argument is yet to be established. The breed of the dog cannot be confirmed," Naidu explained.
She added that police were informed of the incident the next morning from the hospital. A case of attempted murder was opened by police as the victim was in a critical condition and unable to give an account of what had transpired. The 30-year-old suspect was arrested on the same day after he went to the Kabega Park Police Station to report a case of assault against Marais.
"He was arrested and detained on a charge of attempted murder. However, during the early hours of this morning, (Monday, January 16) Marais passed away in hospital," Naidu added.
The suspect faces a charge of murder. A case of assault was opened against Marais by the suspect.
