A dog that was in a critical condition due to smoke inhalation following a house fire last night, March 29, was resuscitated and saved by paramedics at the scene.
According to Bester EMS, at approximately 21:00, they were called to the scene of a house fire in Lloyd Road, Walmer, where they found a man and woman in distress and immediately started treating them.
While attending to a patient, the man ran up to the ambulance crew saying that their pet did not make it.
A senior medic, George Knoesen, did not hesitate one second and instinct kicked in.
"He immediately assessed the dog and noticed it was in critical condition and CPR was initialised, along with some oxygen therapy and other basic treatment. Within a few minutes the dog gained consciousness and after a while of treatment and care he gained some strength and started responding again," Bester EMS said.
The dog was reunited with his family and transported to the nearest vet for further treatment and care.
"Fortunately no lives were lost in this incident."
Bester EMS commended Knoesen for the swift reaction and managing a scene where patients and family pets had to be treated.
"We would also like to commend Khaya and Matthew for the great teamwork on the scene and assistance rendered to Mr. Knoesen."
