Runners across Nelson Mandela Bay braved the chilly, rainy weather conditions as they took to the streets during the third edition of the Vulumzi Senior Secondary School Mandela Day 5Km Fun Run, at Motherwell on Saturday, July 29.
In the senior men’s category, defending champion Nedbank RC athlete, Oyama Ntantiso, was the first runner home after a tough battle with Motherwell AC athlete, Sibusiso Colepi, with individual athlete Mihlali Mabuya being third.
In the senior women’s category, the Motherwell AC athletes, Zintle Xhanti and Nokuthemba Msima, were the first and second runners respectively, while individual runner, Ongezi Nokaka, was the third.
In the junior males, Youth for Change AC athlete, Avela Qutu, defended his title while Motherwell AC runners, Lutho Magaxa and Hlomla Ncumani, finished in second and third place respectively.
In the junior females, Vulumzi SSS Siyamthanda Nqam defended her title. Motherwell AC runner, Liyema Gulwa, and her club mate, Ivana Morgan, were second and third runners respectively.
Event sponsor EnviroServ’s community liaison officer, Zingisa Mabangula, stated that she was very proud to see youths and adults taking part in the fun run.
“I am very proud of Vulumzi SSS because they draw the community together. Furthermore, we as Enviro-Serv have a healthy relationship with this school. EnviroServ operations manager, Sue Alcock, highlighted that taking part in sport helped to instil discipline.”
Ward 59 councillor, Bulelani Matenjwa, appealed to all participants to take sport seriously as “it promotes healthy living”.
Vulumzi SSS headmaster, Mzimkhulu, thanked the participants, school, school governing body, Motherwell SAPS, traffic officers, marshals, community cleaning members brought by Mazangwa Dano, and technical officials for uplifting the standard of their school’s annual race.
“We look forward to making our fun run a major event next time. I would like to thank EnviroServ for making our annual programme an event of huge magnitude,” said Fina.
