Ginger mommy cat Lilo once had a warm and comfortable home, but it probably became a problem for her owners when she fell pregnant.
Being left in an industrial area in Korsten, she gave birth to her four kittens at the beginning of May. She hid them and looked after them for at least two weeks before they were found. After being kept in a safe place, the kittens, which should have been ready to be weaned, were taken to Cat Care foster mom Judith Campbell at five weeks, while Lilo was cared for by a Cat Care fieldworker.
“When I took the kittens in, they had snuffles. Their eyes were swollen closed, their noses were running, and their chests rasped for breath,” said Judith.
They were so sick with snuffles that they wouldn't eat. Judith was nebulizing them four times daily and giving them all the medicine the vet recommended, but they just wouldn't eat.
By chance, the fieldworker had delayed Lilo's sterilization as she too had snuffles.
Eight days after their separation, Lilo was reunited with her kittens, and they immediately began suckling from her. Lilo fully accepted her kittens again despite the separation.
“She saved their lives as they eagerly suckled from her again. They began to eat and play and soon grew big and strong enough to find their own forever homes. We treated Lilo, too, and she was thriving.
“But unfortunately, Lilo was diagnosed with a ruptured cornea and became so sad and quiet. I could see she was uncomfortable and in pain. With the vet's advice, we separated her from her kittens as the rupture was probably caused by an accidental scratch of her eye. We tried hard to save it, but with the vet, we decided to remove the eye and sterilize her at the same time,” said Judith.
“She was like a new cat. She was playing and purring and alert and happy again. She has such character and loves attacking fluffy slippers! She enjoys long stretches and back rubs, and you can hear her purr from the room next door. She really deserves a special family."
According to Judith, Lilo is a playful and friendly cat and definitely not feral, so she assumes she must have been someone’s pet at some stage. Judith has five cats of her own and needs to find a forever home for Lilo. Lilo would be best suited for a home where she is the only cat or where there is another kitten.
