The lifeless body of a 76-year-old Retreat woman, brutally murdered, was found in her bedroom on Sunday 11 September.

According to Steenberg police, the victim was found with bruises on her face.

“On Sunday 11 September at about 20:00, Steenberg police were called to a crime scene in Frans Maroney Street, Retreat, where the body of a 76-year-old female was found by occupants of the house when they returned home.

“According to reports, the victim was found lying on the bedroom floor with bruises on her face.”

A murder case has been opened for investigation.

“The motive for the murder is yet to be established. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”

Meanwhile, Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair Gavin Walburg said it was worrying and disturbing that an elderly person was brutally murdered in her own home.

“It is concerning that someone can attack someone, an elderly person, in such a violent manner.”

He added that the victim was not living alone but was alone at the time of the incident.

“It was a home invasion and a murder but what is very worrying is that our elderly is vulnerable and attacked so brutally.

“An elderly person is supposed to be and feel safe in her home.”

Walburg further added that a similar violent attack on an elderly person occurred three years ago.

“The last brutal attack, a similar attack, the lady was attacked and killed in her home. It’s not something that happens every day but it is a worrying trend that the elderly and vulnerable are killed so violently.”

He urged anyone with information on the incident to come forward.

“If anyone has any information they must please contact the police.

“Also make a statement at the police so that the perpetrator can be charged with the crime.

“Often people talk about the person or perpetrators who are responsible for the crime but they will not make a statement which means the person walks free.”
