The Leon Jacobs Foundation in partnership with Mitchell’s Plain police hosted a crime prevention awareness assembly at Tafelsig High School on Thursday 16 February.
Pastor Leon Jacobs, founder of the foundation, says the event created awareness around shooting and gang violence in the area.
“The message was received well, as we can see on our social media platforms. We chose this school (so that learners can) avoid the outside gang recruitment plan,” he says.
This initiative will be taken to other schools facing similar challenges.
Sgt Zandi Langa, police spokesperson, says they were happy to partner with the foundation to create crime prevention awareness with youth at risk.
“Other organisations can write an email and request that the social crime prevention unit come and do an awareness,” she says.
Jacobs says: “The greatest challenge at our schools is the girls being the carriers of illegal stuff that the boys force them to carry.”
The foundation aims to reach out to vulnerable, at- risk youth with a soft-touch, approachable stance.
“If you can’t stand for something, you will fall for anything” is a motto they use.
