A number of people were left without shelter after a fire broke out at a house in Chad Road, Retreat, on Thursday 31 August.
According to fire and rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, emergency services received a call at around 07:30 on Thursday.
“The emergency call was received at about 07:30 this morning, 31 August, of a house alight in Chad Road, Retreat.
“Crews from Lakeside and Constantia were quickly on scene and found the formal dwelling alight.”
Carelse says firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the blaze by 08:30.
“The blaze caused major damage to the structure and the adjacent property was slightly affected by the heat.
“Several people were displaced and no injuries were reported.”
He added that the cause of the fire is still undetermined.
Meanwhile, Ward 72 councillor Kevin Southgate says it was concerning that the second house, in the same street, had caught fire in the space of two weeks.
“I am concerned about the fires in Chad Road at the old railway houses. It is the second house on the same road that caught fire in two weeks.”
He adds that the house’s roof is made from asbestos, which makes it worrying when a fire breaks out.
