A quiet evening for one family in Table View turned into a nightmare on Sunday (14 April) after intruders stormed their home while they were watching television and tied them up.
The four intruders entered the property in Cabernet Road, Table View, through an unlocked front door, demanding jewellery and cash. The men tied the family members up and ransacked the house, taking jewellery, liquor, bank cards and cellphones before fleeing.
Capt Adriana Chandler, spokesperson for the Table View Police Station, says the swift reaction by armed response companies in the Table View precinct led to the arrest of two suspects.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Neighbour to the rescue
In an unrelated case, a neighbour in Malbec Close heard a noise in his back garden and went to investigate. He found an unknown man in his garden and a struggle ensued. He shouted at another neighbour to call the police.
“The local neighbourhood watch also alerted local armed response companies who arrived swiftly,” Chandler says.
The suspect caught by the neighbour was handed over to the security officer, who handed him over to police shortly afterwards.
Another armed response officer apprehended a second suspect not far from the scene. Jewellery was recovered from both suspects which was handed back to the victim.
Both suspects have been identified by the victims and the 35- and 27-year-old men from Nyanga were arrested and detained at Table View Police Station. They will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court once charged.
Station Commander Col Tjikamba Mbangu applauded the neighbour and armed response companies for their swift reaction in the apprehension of the suspects. He also commends the Table View neighbourhood watch for being the eyes and ears of the community and for sharing the information about the crime taking place with all role players.
Increase in house robberies

One of the incidents took place at a complex in North Road in Table View during the evening of 3 April.
