The Lions Club of Tokai paid a visit to the Tygerberg Hospital’s children’s ward on Thursday 15 February where they distributed soft toys.

The club distributed 50 teddy bears and 50 blankets to the children in two wards. The items were donated to the club by Sandi King from 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. The 67 Blankets campaign was started in December of 2013 by Carolyn Steyn in honour of Nelson Mandela Day, the movement’s website reads.

The children in wards G3 and G6 are recovering from procedures relating to childhood cancer and paediatric orthopaedics. Most of the children have a long road ahead of them in terms of recovery and treatment. This project was planned to coincide with International Childhood Cancer Day, which was on 15 February, says Mark Rossouw on behalf of The Lions Club.

The Lions Club of Tokai also commemorated the club’s one-year anniversary of its collaboration with the Tygerberg Hospital children’s wards. This collaboration started on International Childhood Cancer Day in 2023, when the club visited the hospital for the first time along with the ballet dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet dance company.

“The club would like to extend its gratitude to the nursing staff as well as to the hospital management for allowing the club members to spread love and joy to the young hearts in both wards,” says Rossouw.
