You should always look twice before you buy. Even when you’re suffering from a case of beach fever, says Christie Gerber

What could be lovelier than to drive for kilometres on end along the beach next to the waves and breathe in the fresh sea air – then braai next to the ocean far from everyone else? 

You’re not allowed to do that anymore. This practice was stopped shortly after the turn of the century in an attempt to protect the dunes and wildlife. These days you need a permit to drive on the sand, and even then you’re not allowed to drive very far.  There was a time, however, when beach driving was a perfectly normal outdoor activity.
