The liturgy and prayers at a friend's wedding made Matubua Mahlatjie realise he'd have to renounce his Christianity so he can keep being queer in peace.
I recently went to the wedding of a close friend, Gaobotse Kube, who got married to her love, David.
Gaobotse and I grew up in the Lutheran Church as active members from Sunday school to our youth choir days. But it was my first time listening attentively to the liturgy used to officiate weddings. It was then I realised that I would not join any cause to force the church in its entirety to give me the same affirming ritual for my queer wedding.
