In this in-depth analysis, Muhammad Hussain asked SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) a few questions relating to taxi violence - some in general and some specifically related to the organisation. To the general responses received we supplemented these with analysis from the police, researchers and the 2021 commission of inquiry into Gauteng's taxi violence to get a better sense and scope of the issues within the industry.
Why has
taxi-related violence not been dealt with, given there have been commissions of
inquiries - constant engagement with industry bodies, and even studies linking killings
and hitmen with the industry?
Santaco: It's a lack of follow-up on recommendations derived from the cited commissions and other similar engagements, as well as a seeming lack of buy-in to truly relieve the industry from the prevalence of devastating violence.
