News24 reader Anita Marshall writes that former journalist, author and poet Don Mattera once offered to help her, a complete stranger, to go study journalism in the UK - something she has never forgotten.
I was in my early twenties when I moved to Johannesburg from Cape Town. I used to frequent the art hangouts in downtown Johannesburg, briefly, in the 80's.
There, I met Don Materra at an art theatre, and after speaking to him for a while, he offered to arrange for me to study journalism in United Kingdom. Just like that.
He was constantly pushing younger people.

I did not accept his offer, but I have never forgotten his generosity offered to a complete stranger.
He was a true mensch and had a perfect understanding of non-racialism and that we were people first before pigmentation.
Go well, brother, free spirit. You will be missed.
