‘Tis the season to be merry with deals aplenty, early Christmas shopping and super-savings on shiny new things. That’s right, Black Friday is just around the corner and much like most things this year, it is switching things up.
Black Friday is known for the meteor-like influx of incredible deals and discounts that beckon crowds of South Africans to store doors eager to grab the limited deals in a one-day bonanza. But this time, following the heels of the COVID-19 outbreak and our new social-distancing handbook that came with it, companies like Game, South Africa’s most Googled retailer during Black Friday 2019, will be doing things a little differently this year.
Game plans its Black Friday campaign over a 12-month period in partnership with its global buyers to ensure customers are getting the most unbeatable deals. 2020 is no exception for Game and despite the challenges presented by COVID, the retailer has gone to extra lengths to ensure its customers and employees can shop with peace of mind in store during the entire month of November.
Deals are no longer limited to a single-day frenzy but will instead occur weekly throughout November. Game is running deals from 2 November up until 29 November, allowing everyone the chance to treat themselves and their loved ones and indulge in great deals while saving big.
The idea to spread Black Friday out over 28 days will make the in-store shopping experience both safe and comfortable. And due to the preparation and planning for this important retail calendar day, customers can also expect well stocked stores and can plan their Black Friday shopping experience to take advantage of the weekly deals.
Each week Game will be offering new and exclusive deals for that week. So, customers are urged to keep their eyes peeled on the range of items Game offers at unbeatable prices, from electronics and appliances to groceries, furniture, and more.
And Game isn’t stopping there at ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for their shoppers during this ‘Black Friday’ month-long shopping spree. To ensure employee and customer safety, Game will be increasing staffing levels – both in-store and on the delivery leg, to avoid the building up of crowds and to ensure a safe, seamless, smooth, and pleasant shopping experience for all.
The Vice President at Game, Andrew Stein, expands on the decision for weekly deals by saying, “Having the deals run weekly means more South Africans will be able to access our unbeatable deals in a way that is both safe and convenient. However, these deals will only run for the week in which they are announced – and they are never to be repeated. When these deals are gone, they’re gone.”
As for the in-store safety protocols, Stein adds that there will be sanitising stations, social distancing measures and mask requirements put in place for staff and customers. “While many consumers will choose to shop online, those visiting our stores can rest assured that all the necessary protocols will continue to be followed,” Stein confirms.
In addition to their online store delivery service, Game will also be running deliveries through Uber Eats. After initiating a partnership with Uber Eats during level 5 of lockdown to help provide essential goods to the comfort of their buyers’ homes, they’ll be expanding it for November. This service will now provide more than just the essentials for the month to include home office essentials.
Additionally, Game will also be re-introducing their highly successful ‘1 Cent Price Surprise’. The initiative introduced for Black Friday in 2019 was a hit with their consumers. How it works is that it gives all Game customers, online or in-store, the opportunity to save even more on randomly selected products by paying just 1 cent at checkout. This offer will also only be valid during the period of 2 to 29 November – giving buyers even more reason to get excited for their deals this month.

When exactly will the deals be announced?
As it’s running on a weekly deal basis, the first set of deals will be announced and launched online at midnight on 1 November and be available exclusively for that week. The other set of deals will follow suit by announcing their offers ahead of the weeks they run in. The in-store deals will be available from 2 November.
Game is maintaining continuity by ensuring that the same Black Friday deals will be available both online and in-store, and newsletter subscribers will have early viewing access to all Black Friday deals.
In-store operating hours:
Game stores will not open at midnight as they did last year, instead, there will be set operating hours:
- Monday to Friday: 9 am - 6 pm
- Saturday: 9 am - 5 pm
- Sunday and Public Holidays: 9 am - 4 pm
Delivery wait time & fee:
With the influx of online purchases Game will be expecting during this month of deals, customers can expect a delivery time of 10 – 14 days on all Black Friday orders. The delivery fee will be capped at R90 but will include an extra charge for additional large items added to orders like fridges and chest freezers - they have a R70 surcharge per item, per order.
