From renting out legal firearms for criminal activities and selling stolen state-issued firearms or fraudulent gun licences, to the loss or theft of guns from both the state and the public, South Africa has more than two million illegal guns in circulation.
A new report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime has used existing data and interviews to map out the illicit firearm economy in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Research conducted in 2017 by the Small Arms Survey estimated that about 3.8 million unregistered illegal firearms were in circulation in these countries.
