In a desperate attempt to avoid losing more than half a billion rand in grant funding, the mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Gary van Niekerk, on Monday held an urgent meeting with mayoral committee members and executive directors to draft an action plan.
Last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana gave the municipality until Monday, 19 February, to explain why grant funding should not be cut.
This follows Gondongwana's warning to the municipality that National Treasury would cut several grants, amounting to approximately R520 million, due to under-spending as recorded in the mid-year expenditure reports of the 2023/24 financial year.
