The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has warned that it will march to Pretoria - the country's administrative capital - if government ignores its grievances over the public servants' 4.7% salary increase.
The union described the increase announced by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) minister Noxolo Kiviet as an insult, below inflation and stagnant. It added that it demonstrated the government's disregard for the needs of public servants despite a lack of resources to function optimally.
Thulani Ngwenya, president of Popcru, said the metro police were among the public servants who were underpaid and under-equipped with the necessary resources despite the expectation of them to protect and serve.
