A Durban man was stabbed multiples times when he fought off two men who had followed him into a doctor's surgery in Trenance Park, Verulam, but he lived to tell the tale.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was captured on security footage.

The man can be seen talking to staff at the surgery, as the two attackers enter. They move closer until they are standing right behind him.

A scuffle breaks out after they try to snatch his cellphone and during the fracas, the men pull out large knives and take turns to stab him repeatedly before fleeing the scene.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) head Prem Balram said the patient was robbed of a Samsung phone.

"Reaction Officers arrived on scene at 16:47 and found the doctor stabilising the critically wounded patient. The 37-year-old, who arrived at the medical facility seeking treatment for flu symptoms, suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and body."

Balram said, "His left lung was punctured and he further suffered a penetrating knife wound close to his heart."

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Verulam police were investigating an attempted murder.
