Three earthquakes, which shook Johannesburg in the past three weeks, are most likely the result of water ingress (or penetrating damp) and mining activity, says at least one seismologist.
Dr Martin Brandt, from the Council for Geoscience (CGS), said the frequency of earthquakes was not increasing, but that we were becoming more aware of them.
This is partly due to social media posts and amateur scientists sharing information on tremors and seismic events, he believes.
