Makro recently released its top 10 toys rated by kids aged between six and 12, and the items will be sold at both Makro and Game over the festive season.

Earlier this year, Makro called on 250 children to participate in the annual Top Rated by Kids campaign.

The children got to test and play with several never-before-seen toys to select 10 of their best-rated for 2023. And now the verdict is in, with the experts choosing:

  • Avalanche Gel Shot
  • Zing Hyperstrike Slingshot
  • Zing Air Storm Z-Tek Bow
  • iPlay Drifter 8-Wheeler
  • iPlay Glow Pro
  • Nerf Double Punch
  • Goo Jit Zu Shifters
  • iPlay Build-a-Bot

What's exciting is that Makro and Game stores have secured exclusive rights to sell South Africa's most coveted toy of the year – the Avalanche Gel Shot.

Toy buyer for Makro, Eugene Harms, said movies and social media continued to drive toy trends in the country, shown by the branded nature of many of the top toys.

"This year, new movie releases from Barbie and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have resulted in increased interest in related toys, and this is expected to continue to drive sales during the festive season. TV shows such as Paw Patrol also continue to drive demand from our shoppers," he said.

According to Katherine Madley, vice-president of group marketing at Massmart, which owns Game and Makro, baskets are usually full of toys in the last three months of the year.

She said: "32.88% of our customer baskets at Makro during the period [from] October to December consist of toys each year, and this number keeps growing.

"By involving our suppliers and local children in this campaign, we consistently meet our customers' needs during the festive season, especially with the influx of exciting new releases in the country."

These top-rated toys are scheduled to hit the shelves of Makro and Game stores from October 28, both in-store and online.
