Ronwen Williams has made no secret of his desire to test himself against the best in Europe - but Bafana Bafana's captain has revealed why he is more than happy to stay put at Mamelodi Sundowns, having recently penned a new deal with the club.

Like the rest of us, Williams was confident that a move abroad would materialize after his heroics at the 2023 African Cup of Nations in January.

The 32-year-old was instrumental in Bafana Bafana's third place berth and singlehandedly helped his country win a bronze medal.

With the world watching on, no suitors surfaced for the Gelvandale-born star, which saw him pen a new deal, which runs until 2028, five months later.

When asked whether the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup would be the ideal opportunity for him to once again put himself in the shop window, Williams expressed his commitment to the Brazilians.

"I think if that [a move] was to materialize, it should have happened after AFCON, I feel like that was the perfect moment – but nothing concrete came my way or anything that my management or the club brought up, so why not stay at Mamelodi Sundowns where we’re looking to be part of great things, where we’re looking to be part of the [FIFA] Club World Cup, they’re giving me that platform, so I’m happy to stay at the club,” he said at the 2023 COSAFA awards at the Sandton Convention Center.

“I signed a new contract, long may this continue, the achievements, the success – and even the heartbreak, because that builds us and it fuels us to go even harder the next season so I’m happy at Sundowns and I’m looking forward to the Club World Cup.

“But if something comes, and the club is happy, then so be it!" he said.
