Mercedes targets decent result in Singapore, but remains wary of track's bumpy nature

Mercedes technical director Mike Elliott targets a decent performance at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend.

The concern for the Mercedes team is the bumpy nature of the Marina Bay Street Circuit heading into the remaining six races of the 2022 season, with the Silver Arrows team still winless.

The upcoming races in Japan, the United States, Mexico and Abu Dhabi are seen as circuits where Mercedes will struggle, but Singapore looks suited to the W13 due to its high-downforce layout, as was the case in Hungary and the Netherlands.

Bumpy nature

The issue with street circuits like Singapore is that they tend to be bumpy by nature, and with Mercedes' porpoising problems this season, they could face a few challenges.

But Elliott feels they will be able to deal with the challenges that may arise at Marina Bay.

"When you look back at the learning we have gathered over the season, I think we expect that Singapore will be a bit more like we've seen in Budapest and Zandvoort," Elliott said.

"It's a bumpy circuit which is going to provide its challenges, but in terms of the nature of the corners, we think it could be a bit better for our car. So, hopefully, we will have a good result there.

"As always with all the pre-simulation work we do, we will maximise our learning in the practice sessions and hopefully, turn that into a good result over the weekend."
