Cracked heels can be a sore eye.

We put a lot of energy into our skincare routine and this is evident through the number of trends seen on social media, however, many hardly invest the same energy into their footcare.

With the country still in the grips of winter, it is normal to struggle with dry skin, which also affects the feet. According to Mayo Clinic, cracked heels occasionally lead to more serious problems if left untreated.

Factors that can worsen the condition includes standing for long hours, walking around barefoot or with open-back sandals, taking long and hot showers, using harsh soaps that can strip your skin of natural oils, among others.

However, cracked heels could also be caused by medical issues such as "diabetes, eczema, hypothyroidism, Sjögren's syndrome, juvenile plantar dermatosis, infections such as athlete's foot, biomechanical factors such as flat feet, heel spurs".

Here are four steps to manage cracked heels:

Step 1: Soak and exfoliate

According to Women’s Health, the key is to soften your calloused, dry feet in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. Soaking your feet will hydrate your calloused skin and make it easier for a pumice stone or foot file to do its job.

Step 2: Moisturise religiously

If you struggle with hardened heels then it’s crucial to use a moisturiser religiously. Mayo Clinic says applying a heavier, oil-based cream or petroleum jelly can do the trick then slip on a pair of thin cotton socks at bedtime to help the moisturiser work.

Step 3: Choose the right footwear

Choosing the right footwear can help prevent cracked heels. If you’re constantly dealing with cracked skin, it may be time to reevaluate your shoe collection as certain pairs can aggravate heels.

Step 4: Make footcare part of your routine

Just like your skincare routine, it’s equally important to continue to give your feet some love - even after you’ve healed them. "The best treatment for cracked heels is avoiding it in the first place which means daily moisturizing and weekly exfoliating - this is important in both cold and warm weather," advises Dr Splichal tells Women’s Health.
