  • Skinimalism is the growing trend of people embracing more minimalistic makeup and skincare routines
  • Skin tints or tinted moisturisers use more lightweight formulas for more natural coverage than heavy duty foundations.
  • Face designer and Armani Beauty counter manager Lebo Monareng encourages using your fingers for more lightweight and natural coverage.

A full face beat can be just the creative outlet you need to play around with mattifying foundations, vibrant eyeshadows and shimmering blushes.

But sometimes you just need that quick and natural looking enhancer when you’re on the go or don’t have the time for a full glam look.

Skinimalism stays getting more and more popular with people focused more on embracing more minimalistic skincare routines.

As the trend amongst beauty gurus and enthusiasts grows, beauty brands are catching on and creating more lightweight and natural looking formulas that usually only need small amount when applying it to skin.

This is where skin tints and tinted moisturisers have entered the chat.

High-end makeup brands like Estée Lauder describe a skin tint as “a filter for your skin. One layer of this sheer complexion perfector can even out your skin tone, enhance your natural glow and boost hydration. If you’ve been searching for face makeup with the most minimal coverage possible and a natural-looking finish, you’ll want to get your hands on a skin tint.”

TRUELOVE got the opportunity to see the launch of Armani Beauty hit Africa’s shores for the first time in the glamorous suburbs of Houghton Estate. The luxury beauty brand treated guests to a professional masterclass that showcased easy to try and lightweight makeup looks for any occasion.

Why all the skin tint and skinimalism craze?

Makeup in itself is an artform no matter how full coverage you’d like your face beat to be. The difference with lightweight tinted moisturisers is that many have ingredients like glycerin that have skin-enhancing benefits.

Lebo Monareng, face designer and counter manager for the Giorgio Armani Edgars counter, explains to us why, in her professional opinion, skin tints and more natural looks have become more popular since the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

“Well, it has been proven that the more natural you look, the more you exude beauty from within and I think that’s where people are actually taking that direction because it’s something that we’ve learnt.

“We’ve just experienced Covid and at that time we had a lot of people really finding themselves and searching and understanding the importance of how confidence and how you feel really affects the entire aspect of your life. So, I think that is such an attractive thing when you are able to see yourself as beauty in your most natural way.”

A step-by-step guide to an all-natural makeup look

1. Prep your skin

It may seem like we harp on about skincare, but it truly is the most important step making sure that your skin is clean, hydrated, moisturised and healthy before applying any makeup, even with skin tints.

“Your makeup will only be as good as your skin underneath,” Lebo explains. “There’s absolutely no way you’re going to be applying makeup without prepping well that you’re going to get the outcome that you are desiring.”

2. Careful and specific brush strokes

When applying your tinted moisturiser or skin tint, the way you slide your makeup brush over your face will help with how much coverage you’d like.

Lebo shares some advice on how to build up coverage using a lightweight foundation.

“If you really want to build it to full coverage or your desired effect, when you use your brush instead of just sliding it up only, on your desired area just dab or stibble. Then it gives more coverage and that will actually avoid for you to use more product.”

Tip: Use a foundation brush over a blending sponge when applying your skin tint or foundation since sponges soak up the product, making you pump out more than necessary. For a more natural look, feel free to blend the product with your fingers.

Lebo’s tips when choosing between a full coverage foundation and skin tints
  • The best thing to do is obviously choose a foundation that will give you the right texture and finish. Also, there’s different preferences.
  • You still can get a lightweight and natural looking full coverage foundation but ideally you need to always use the correct skincare products.
  • Skin preparation is key to getting the perfect makeup results.

3. Use a light concealer for dark circles and highlighting

Apply a small amount of concealer with a soft brush or with your fingertips again to get natural looking and beautiful coverage.

“Dabbing really gives a beautiful finish and you’re able to get to all the areas without having to use a lot of product. And what’s left on the brush you can use above your brow … basically where light hits underneath your brow as well,” Lebo says.

4. Colour, shimmer and shine

Depending on your preferences, your final steps can include applying a little bit of a powder or liquid blush and shimmering highlighter to add that gorgeous glowing rose affect to your cheekbones.

“Basically, the ring finger is able to warm the product onto the skin. So, it essentially works much better than a brush and what’s lovely is that, just like a foundation, you can build the colour. If you want it more visible, you’re more than welcome to actually build on it so it can be added and be more intense.”
