1. Klementinum is the national library of the Czech Republic and is part of the Jesuit University, situated in Prague. Opened in 1722, it hosts over 20 000 books and is known for its beautiful Baroque inspired architecture.

2. The Long Room Library at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland is 200 feet long and holds a collection of 200 000 of some of the world’s oldest books. Known for its distinctive high barrel ceiling, which was added in 1860, the Long Room is lined with prolific busts of philosophers and writers who have supported the Irish college.

  

3. The Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart is a nine-storey building dedicated to various literary collections, such as music, knowledge, life and literature. Also known as The German Cube, the library was officially opened in 2011 and has books in over 20 foreign languages.

4. The library situated in the Strahov Monastery in Prague dates back to the 12th century where around 200 000 old prints have been restored. Two halls, the Theological Hall and the Philosophical Hall, were built to store the many precious items, including the Strahov Evangeliary from the 9th century.

5. Liverpool Central Library is located in the centre of the English city and has 15 000 rare books in its various halls and libraries, including the impressive Picton Reading Room. The remodelled building has various services including a gaming area with free use of Xbox consoles and WIFI-access throughout the building.

6. The George Peabody Library located in the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States, first opened in 1878 and covers practically every subject, except music. The monumental six-tier library has become an extraordinary wedding and event venue that surrounds its guests with the most beautiful interior of over 300 000 volumes of historic literature.

7. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, has six specialised libraries and can hold up to more than a million books. The 11-storey building is a state of the art facility, as it encompasses four museums and thirteen academic research centres.

8. The José Vasconcelos Library, also known as the Biblioteca Vasconcelos, is situated in Mexico City. The interior of the national library is made of steel, concrete and glass, which creates a multidimensional environment with a 6 layered walkway filled with books.

9. The Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, built in 1851, inherited the collection of one of the oldest Parisian abbeys and is the library’s namesake. The French public library is known for its cast-iron arches and columns, which was designed by Henri Labrouste, one of the greatest French architects of the 19th century.

10. The Boston Public Library opened to the public in 1854 and has a collection of 23 million items including rare books, maps, musical scores and prints. The Bates Hall, which is architecturally known as one of the most important rooms in the world, is magnificent with its 15-arched windows and 50 foot high majestic ceiling richly carved in limestone.
