Book review: Fragments by Sarah Foot

Fragments by Sarah Foot (first published in 2015 by Quercus)
When Phillip Snowe retires from his stellar advertising career to spend more time with his teenage children and do community work, it promises to improve the family’s life.

But the reality is very different: his wife feels more pressure to achieve in her high-flying legal career, and the community work brings additional distractions that threaten to tear their lives apart.

For single mother Laura Cusack, just finding time in the day to pursue her artistic ambitions is a challenge in itself. When she encounters a highly talented but troubled teen, she feels a strong desire to help the girl rise above her dire living circumstances.

How these two characters try to do the right thing, withstand the pressure and expectations of their families, but still remain true to their own hearts makes for a touching and sometimes sad story.

Sarah Foot provides none of the glib solutions that romantic fiction traditionally offers. Instead she poses the more tricky question: When love cannot conquer all, what remains?
