Creative shelving for your family room

accreditation
Problem: Three-year-old Tom regularly makes a beeline for the low shelves in the family room, unpacking CDs and at the same time leaving a trail of discarded toys behind him.

Solution: An unused doorway was given new life by creating shelving for small items. The room doubles up as family room and play room, so we filled the bottom shelves with durable plastic buckets with lids, woven baskets and see-through plastic soap dishes, which work well for small items such as crayons or chalk.

We filled one of the shelves that Tom could still reach with soft toys. The higher shelves are for the grown-ups, for example, for shelving CDs. Small Perspex containers are great for storing small items such as spare keys and trinkets.
