Fabulous at 40

I had been planning my mid life crisis since the age of 35, only it came two years earlier than expected.  It was a time of re-evaluation, breaking down some aspects of my life and building up others.

I felt real panic as my 40th was drawing near.  I wanted to be able to embrace it, but all I was feeling was resistance.  I had heard that it is a wonderful time in a woman’s life, that she comes into her own and feels more fabulous about herself than ever before.  I wasn’t sure that was going to be the case for me.

I’ve never minded getting older.  In fact, I’ve celebrated my birthdays with relish.  So why was this different?  I suppose it was about where I thought I should be at this point in my life in comparison to where I actually was. Until, I just allowed myself to be where I was and to know that all this deconstructing was going to amount to some awesome reconstructing of how I see myself.

And it did!  I have to say that my last few months of 39 have been awesome!  They have not been without challenges, but the way I handled them and the way I felt inside was different.

I just turned 40 a few weeks ago and I am having a fabulous time.  It is true that a woman comes into her own in her 40’s.  Things that used to bother me, just don’t anymore.  The need to prove myself, to look a certain way and act a certain way has just lost it’s appeal.  At 40, I feel more authentically me than ever before.

Why does it take us 40 years to get here?  Who knows, but maybe the journey is the what’s needed.  Maybe we just get tired of being what others think we need to be and decide to stop trying to be something we are not.

In a fashion context, I think women get bolder in their clothing choices.  I don’t necessarily mean that they suddenly want to dress like teenagers, but that they own their right to choose what they are going to wear rather than dressing to fit in.  It may mean choosing comfort over high fashion or wearing red when all they ever wore was blue.

I definitely feel this way.  I’m bolder and braver in my choices.  Aspects of my body that use to bother me, just don’t any more.  And I feel free.

Here’s to feeling fabulous at 40…or whatever age you are because life is just too short not to!
