Johannesburg – The EFF said it wants to rescue the opening of Parliament from the fashion parade it has become.
As the clock ticks down the EFF said it would hold President Jacob Zuma accountable to the country for the upgrades to his home at Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal.
This is according to a "Sona countdown Zuma #paybackthemoney" clock on its website.
EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said on Monday that the countdown to this year's State of the Nation address started on Sunday.
"The importance of the 12th [February]... is to think of it as the day of accountability," he said.
"We want to rescue it from the fashion parade it has become."
The State of the Nation address has become a glittering occasion with MPs dressing to the nines.
MPs sporting designer wear pose and smile for the cameras before entering the National Assembly to hear the president's annual report.
Ndlozi said the EFF wanted to restore the opening of Parliament and the interaction with the executive, making sure that people are held accountable.
"Pay back the money is a good opportunity for that."
Zuma will address the nation on 12 February.
The EFF vowed to disrupt the speech unless a special sitting of the National Assembly is scheduled for Zuma to answer questions about the upgrades to his private home at Nkandla.
Speaker Baleka Mbete has since announced that Zuma will answer questions in the National Assembly in March.
Most recently, the EFF has threatened to appear nude in the National Assembly if its members are barred from wearing red overalls, gumboots and maids' uniforms.
This followed efforts by Parliament to toughen regulations on the dress code for MPs.
