How I chose life over death

Facing up to the reality that your bad lifestyle choices will kill you one day is very much like having someone throw a rock through your car’s windscreen.

On impact you are shocked this could actually happen to you but give it a little time, you’re overwhelmed with guilt and blame.

This is what happened to me when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time I weighed 86.6 kilograms and the nurse who took care of my mom warned me to do something about my weight as I was a time bomb waiting to go off and that I could also end up like my mom.

At first I was stunned, how dare she say this to me? But once it sank in, I began to feel anger towards myself for neglecting my health for so long.

I am a mother of a two-year old and have a lot to live for. So I started a 12-week challenge. I was determined not to become a statistic and take charge of my life and lose weight.

I signed up to Adventure Boot Camp and at the start I was so unfit that just taking a few steps made me lose my breath.

But soon I was enjoying it so much, it was a really great way to exercise outside and I loved the motivation I got for the ladies in my class. It really made all the difference.

The first week was very tough. It was in fact the most difficult week of my entire life!

Although the eating plan was quite easy, the chocolate flavoured shake didn’t quite match a caramel cupcake (and believe me…you do think of cupcakes).

Week two was a little bit easier. I found myself arguing out loud with my conscience in public about why I couldn’t have the sweet or chocolate on the shelf.

I am still not sure what people must have thought of me.

From the third week I began to lose myself in the programme.I was committed to reaching my goal and just exercised, ate healthy, worked and slept.

Before I knew it I had lost 10 kilograms. It might sound a lot but because my goal weight was 55 kilograms, I still had 21 kilograms to go.

We all have different reasons for keeping motivated. Besides what the nurse told me about being a ticking time bomb, it was my husband’s commitment to waking me up every morning at 04h45 to get ready for Adventure Boot Camp; the thought of not being classified as the “fat chick” or “fatty boom boom”; being a great role model for my child; as well as all the ladies I trained with side by side each and every morning.

After two months of following a strict eating plan I learned to discipline myself in such a way that I lost another few kilograms. My 12 week challenge turned into 12 months. I discovered it’s not an easy process and there isn’t really any easy way out!

Through my journey I gained friends, and lost some (for the better) and I got to know myself and my full potential. I came to respect myself and my body and to understand that my body is not a waste bag.

I discovered that exercise is not a chore but a joy and now my way of life. Through exercise I have become confident in everything I do!
